King is an intact male born in January of 2015. He lives with his owner on a farm where he works with goats and poultry. King is his owner's shadow. He is sensitive and generally wants to please. He is extremely intelligent, highly food driven, insatiable learner, has a very nice off switch and is good with children. He is his owner's "go to" dog for locating kids (goats) when new mothers forget they have them and lose them. He scents them out EVERY time very quickly.
His owner would like for King to improve his intuition (even though it is higher than the rest of her ES). He needs to be less vocal when frustrated. She expects his consistency when herding to improve with maturity. Most of the time, he is super gentle, almost to the point where the goats don't fear him (although the ducks always move for him).At times, he gets overstimulated and will be quite pushy in the chase. Then, they really move for him, but he can get excited ad nippy at those times.
His owner wishes more than one option can be chosen in the below summaries because he is usually appropriate in his control, but sometimes acts aggressively. However, he is generally pretty good about calling off. His bite position depends on whether a doe is balking and facing him or whether she is running away. King doesn't easily discourage and enjoys working. Some days his herding is well executed, but he is inconsistent in his precision and drive.
King is a young dog with lots of potential. He gets along with most animals and dogs (except intact males on the property). He finds cats fascinating and as a puppy was quite interested in the idea of chasing then, but now understands they belong on the farm. This past summer, his owner was using him for keeping free range goats in line. He would occasionally notice that they had moved into areas when they "weren't allowed" and would voluntarily move them out of those areas before he was told to do so.
King and Jazz are the poultry assistants. He frequently aids in putting recalcitrant ducks away in the poultry shed in the evening. In addition to herding, he is used to guard gates - keeping ducks in the pasture with the gate open while the area is being cleaned out with a tractor. He is used to hold goats outside the barn when it is being cleaned out.
King is nurturing towards injured or sick animals. He enjoys the water and loves to retrieve. He is a bit reserved with adult strangers. Preferring to keep aloof, particular when owner is not around. He will circle at a distance, barking. However, when the owners are home, he stands down quickly.
